Theme B) Side channels and natural banks

Both side channels and freely erodible banks can improve ecological diversity and are often built as a part of restoration projects. However, extensive erosion or sedimentation requires expensive maintenance. At the same time discharge capacity and navigability of the (main) channel should be guaranteed, whilst maintenance efforts should be manageable and cost-effective.

This theme developed an improved understanding to:

  • Better design side channels by predicting the morphological changes over time.
  • Characterize local processes governing the (rate of) bank erosion.
