We look back with great pleasure on the successful kick-off meeting of the research program Future FRM Tech that took place on March 21, 2024. In the historic water fort Lunet aan de Snel, 51 participants, consisting of researchers and representatives from companies and other societal partners, gathered to discuss the progress of the project and exchange knowledge and ideas aimed at advancing flood risk management technologies.
The meeting commenced with a welcome address by Chairman Don de Bake. Bas Jonkman provided an overview of the day’s agenda, setting the stage for a series of presentations by researchers, including PhD candidates and Postdocs, who introduced themselves and their research focus areas. The researchers are working in three lines of research, which are:
- Impementation and socio-economic risk framework
- Flood-resilient landscapes in natural water systems
- Improvements in flood defence solutions
This was followed by an informative tour of the water fort by Wim Uijttewaal.
Later in the afternoon, there were two rounds of interactive parallel sessions. In the first round, the challenges in the field of flood risk were discussed per case study (the Geul, the major rivers, and Zeeland), after which research opportunities were debated. In the second round, collaboration and the planning of future steps were discussed per research line.
The meeting made it clear to us that there are many challenges surrounding water safety to which the Future FRM project can contribute. Furthermore, we see ambition and enthusiasm from both researchers and users to contribute to this.
Stay tuned for more updates as these projects develop and new insights are gained.
