The wave overtopping load on landward slopes of grass-covered flood defences: Deriving practical formulations using a numerical model

Flow separation at the landward crest line occurs for steep slopes resulting in high impact forces by the overtopping wave at the reattachment location and the landward toe. We were able to capture both process accurately and used the model outputs to calculate erosion indices that show when and where erosion of the grass cover is expected.

De belasting inclusief loslating en impact is gemodelleerd voor een individuele overslaande golf in OpenFOAM. Voor een steil binnentalud laat de golf los bij de kruinlijn wat leidt tot een hoge belasting op het boventalud. Nieuwe praktische formules zijn afgeleid voor de maximale snelheid, druk, normaalspanning en schuifspanning. Deze formules zijn gebruikt om verschillende erosie indexen te berekenen die laten zien waar en wanneer erosie van de grasmat verwacht wordt.

A newly developed framework not to overestimate safety along the many coastlines around the world that have shallow foreshores (e.g. saltmarshes and mudflats). Considering the influence of very long waves, which are often neglected in flood risk assessments is important when calculating the likelihood of waves overtopping the dikes.

Rekening houden met de invloed van zeer lange golven, die vaak worden verwaarloosd in overstromingsrisicobeoordelingen, is belangrijk bij het berekenen van de kans dat golven de dijken overslaan.
