Inside the black box of collaboration: a process-tracing study of collaborative flood risk governance in the Netherlands

Avoyan, E. - 11/10/2021 - All-Risk
This study suggests that well-organised processes of principled engagement facilitated by adaptive and connective leaders may compensate for lack of shared motivation among collaborating parties and succeed in delivering desired collaborative outputs without investing much in building trust and shared motivation.

Inside the black box of collaboration: a process-tracing study of collaborative flood risk governance in the Netherlands

Avoyan, E. - 11/10/2021 - All-Risk

Human interventions in a bifurcating river system: Numerical investigation and uncertainty assessment

Gensen, M. R. A., Warmink, J. J., Huthoff, F., & Hulscher, S. J. M. H. - 05/10/2021 - All-Risk
For intervention design in a bifurcating river, it is important to consider the entire river system and explicitly account for a range of discharge conditions to avoid unwanted water level increases throughout the river system.

Geophysical tomography as a tool to estimate the geometry of soil layers: Relevance for the reliability assessment of dikes

J. Chavez Olalla, T. G. Winkels, D. J. M. Ngan-Tillard, T.J. Heimovaara - 05/09/2021 - All-Risk
A combined approach to estimate the geometry of soil layers is presented. The approach combines local point data, i.e. data obtained from a CPT or a borehole log, and geophysical tomography in a universal cokriging framework.

Geophysical tomography as a tool to estimate the geometry of soil layers: Relevance for the reliability assessment of dikes

J. Chavez Olalla, T. G. Winkels, D. J. M. Ngan-Tillard, T.J. Heimovaara - 05/09/2021 - All-Risk

Formulating wave overtopping at vertical and sloping structures with shallow foreshores using deep-water wave characteristics

Lashley, C. H., Van der Meer, J., Bricker, J. D., Altomare, C., Suzuki, T., and Hirayama, K. - 31/08/2021 - All-Risk
Accurate estimates of wave height and period at the structure toe often proves difficult and requires the use of either physical modeling or high-resolution numerical wave models. Here, we follow Goda's method to establish an accurate prediction by directly incorporating the foreshore slope and the relative water depth at the structure toe.

Formulating wave overtopping at vertical and sloping structures with shallow foreshores using deep-water wave characteristicsn

Lashley, C. H., Van der Meer, J., Bricker, J. D., Altomare, C., Suzuki, T., and Hirayama, K. - 31/08/2021 - All-Risk

Flood risk reduction by parallel flood defences

Marijnissen, R., Kok, M., Kroeze, C., & van Loon-Steensma, J. - 01/08/2021 - All-Risk
Double dikes should be assessed using the transmitted loads of parallel defences rather than the failure of individual defences. The case study of this parallel defence consists of a low dike landward of a tall dike at the coast that, although designed with multi-functional purpose via a culvert, has a negligible improvement in flood protection.
