My name is Bouke Biemond. Since I was a child, I was very interested in physics and biology. When I was considering what to study, I chose for the bachelor Physics and Astronomy at Utrecht University because of challenging topics regarding physics I could learn there. For my master, I continued in the field of physics and chose the master Climate Physics, because of its applicability to ‘the outside world’. After having finished my master, I got the opportunity to start with the PhD project in the SALTISolutions group, again at Utrecht Universtiy. I liked the project and thats how I started here.
I am part of the research group ‘Physical Oceanography’ at the Institute for Maritime and Atmospheric Research Utrecht (IMAU). This research group studies, as its name says, the physics of the oceans, ranging from plastic transport by ocean currents to El Niño dynamics.
In my project, we are interested in the effects of climate change on the salt intrusion. “What will the situation regarding salt intrusion be in the climate of the next century?” is the central question. To study this, we use idealised models to gain a better understanding of how the salt intrusion works and want in the end to apply these models to the Rhine-Meuse delta.
