Evaluating residual dike resistance using the Random Material Point Method

Remmerswaal, G., Vardon, P.J., & Hicks, M.A. - 01/05/2021 - All-Risk
The resistance against flooding after initial failure due to slope instability of an idealised dike reduces the probability of flooding by 25% with respect to the initial failure.

Sudesh Dahal, Alessandra Crosato, Amgad Y. A. Omer and Aaron A. Lee - 23/04/2021

How grazing management can maximise erosion resistance of salt marshes

Marin-Diaz, B., Govers, L. L., van der Wal, D., Olff, H., & Bouma, T. J. - 20/04/2021 - All-Risk
We aimed to determine how salt marsh management (i.e. grazing by large vs. small grazers vs. artificial mowing), marsh elevation and marsh age affect soil stability (i.e. soil collapse) and intrinsic lateral erodibility of salt marshes (i.e. particle-by-particle detachment).

Numerical modelling of wave overtopping at dikes using OpenFOAM

Chen, W., Warmink, J. J., van Gent, M. R. A., & Hulscher, S. J. M. H. - 21/03/2021 - All-Risk
A 2D numerical model based on OpenFOAM® is set up in this study for predicting wave overtopping at dikes that have complex configurations with berms and roughness elements.

Risks and management of alien freshwater crayfish species in the Rhine-Meuse river district

Pim Lemmers, Frank P.L. Collas, Ronald Gylstra, Ben H.J.M. Crombaghs, Gerard van der Velde and Rob S.E.W. Leuven* - 17/03/2021

Failure probability by wave overtopping over grass-covered and damaged dikes

van Bergeijk, Vera M.; Warmink, Jord J.; Hulscher, Suzanne J.M.H. - 03/03/2021 - All-Risk
We berekenen de faalkans van overslag voor dijken met een goede en beschadigde grasmat en laten zien dat beschadigen aan de grasmat, zoals een konijnen hol of een erosie gat, leiden tot een behoorlijke toename van de faalkans.

Failure probability by wave overtopping over grass-covered and damaged dikes

van Bergeijk, Vera M.; Warmink, Jord J.; Hulscher, Suzanne J.M.H. - 03/03/2021 - All-Risk
We calculate the failure probability by wave overtopping of grass-covered and damaged dikes and show that damages to the dike cover, such as an animal burrowing or an erosion hole, can increase the failure probability significantly.
