The Rhine-Meuse Delta has a negative budget: Its entire network of channels is losing sediment annually. The reason for this negative budget is the high amounts of sand and mud removed for navigation to inland ports and from harbors which are periodically dredged. A strategy is required to deal with channel degradation and find ways to maintain sediment in the system.

De Rijn-Maasdelta heeft een negatieve balans: Het hele netwerk van kanalen kanalen verliest jaarlijks sediment. De reden voor deze negatieve is te wijten aan de grote hoeveelheden zand en slib die voor de scheepvaart naar binnenhavens en uit havens die periodiek worden gebaggerd. Een strategie is vereist om de aantasting van kanalen aan te pakken en manieren te vinden om de sediment in het systeem te houden.
