Better understanding of piping erosion and wave overtopping.
Experimental facilities are important for developing a better understanding of dike failure mechanisms. Deltares has specialized hydraulic and geotechnical laboratories, which have been used in the Allrisk project to study piping erosion and wave overtopping.
On one side, project D2 uses small-scale experiments to study the factors that determine the piping erosion rate. On the other side, project D5 uses small-scale physical model tests to quantify the effects of horizontal berms and block revetment on the overtopping discharge. The results are used to validate existing models and quantify effects on dike safety levels.
