Practical challenge

Dikes along the Wadden Sea need to be reinforced to cope with the sea-level rise. Despite the needs for flood safety, the coastal area is also important for nature development, recreation and grazing. Therefore, the Regional Water Authorities are implementing several pilots to allow more nature-based measures. To better design these measures, it is important to investigate the actual effects for attenuating the sea waves and the wave run-up over the dikes.

Expected research outcomes

AllRisk (project B1) assesses the effects for both safety and nature development by testing saltmarsh and tidal flats erosion. Moreover, AllRisk research (project B2) is improving modelling techniques of long waves that influence the design of coastal dikes.
