Insights for river restoration

Many rivers and streams in low-land areas like the Netherlands are being restored by for example removing the bank protection. Can we predict the lateral activity and channel pattern of these streams?

RiverCare researcher, Jasper Candel studied the history of the subsoil next to the Drentsche Aa stream to explain its stable shape to project managers of restoration projects. The Drentsche has an angular meander pattern that results from a peat-filled deposit.  The stream banks are laterally stable because of the fine erosion resistant material in the outer bank and therefore fixes itself in its own deposits.

Explore his project to learn more about the conceptual models and tools that he proposes to predict the stream channel pattern according to the type of deposits.
