Innovative components

We quantify the water level variations for high and low roughness in the main channel when considering or not the feedback mechanism between the discharge at the bifurcation and the water levels.

Implications to practice

The roughness conditions in the larger Waal branch dominate the water level variations throughout the entire river system. The conditions in the smaller Nederrijn and IJssel branches cause much smaller water level variations. Therefore, we may allow for less restrictive management in the Nederrijn and IJssel branches.
