Theme A) Risk Framework

Many factors contribute to local flood risk conditions. Flood risk is typically a product of the probability of flooding and its societal and economic consequences. Lowering either one of these factors can reduce the flood risk. Lowering the probability of flooding can be done by, for example, reducing the loads with strategic nature development or by increasing the strength with dike reinforcements.

The projects below, as part of theme A (risk framework), investigate the interaction between the factors shaping overall flood risk, and look for optimum ways to reach flood protection. Together, they propose a risk-based design method to assess a dike stretch comparing the costs and benefits of various flood risk mitigation measures during their life-cycle. Thereby, they assess the safety effects of both traditional and innovative reinforcement measures.
