Ongoing research to optimise possible reinforcement measures.
Large parts of the Lekdijk between Streefkerk and Fort Everdingen do not meet safety standards and need to be reinforced. We investigate optimal reinforcements over multiple dike sections to mitigate the risk of failure modes such as piping, overtopping and slope instability for the coming years. We carried out this task together with the Regional Water Authority (Riviereland Waterschap).
The outcomes of the research analysis have been used to define the scope for the next stage in the dike reinforcement project. This is the first reinforcement project where an explicit consideration has been made to reinforce only part of the segment. Only the sections where the investments are most effective for the overall safety are reinforced, and the safety standard will not be met immediately. At a later stage of the Flood Protection Program the remaining sections will be reinforced. The expectation is that this is a more efficient reduction of flood risk, with limited nuisance for the environment and inhabitants in the area, at lower cost.
