To support sustainable river management integrative measures are required. The longitudinal training dams are an innovative pilot intervention in the Dutch River Waal, which holds great promise to become a common river engineering measure inside and outside The Netherlands. Stony structures were built parallel to the river bank thereby separating the river into the main channel and a sheltered channel (see Figure). These dams are expected to have several positive effects.
