Theme A) Optimizing the longitudinal dams design

Innovative components

The longitudinal dams are a pilot intervention in the River Waal, which hold great promise to become a common river engineering measure inside and outside The Netherlands. The specific projects develop the scientific knowledge to optimize the design and management of longitudinal training dams in terms of navigation, flood protection and ecological rehabilitation of regulated rivers. Comprehensive datasets are being collected and new monitoring approaches are tested:

  • As a generic method to analyze bathymetries from a physical scale model or fieldĀ measurements. River managers could use this method to understand the interactions between the river dynamics and the sediment mobilized in dunes or deposited in alternated bars.
  • The species sensitivity distribution approach that we use to evaluate the ecological effects of the longitudinal dams can be further applied to other river engineering measures.
