Theme A) Optimizing the longitudinal training dams design

To support sustainable river management integrative measures are required. The longitudinal training dams are an innovative pilot intervention in the Dutch River Waal, which holds great promise to become a common river engineering measure inside and outside The Netherlands. Stony structures were built parallel to the river bank thereby separating the river into the main channel and a sheltered channel (see Figure). These dams are expected to have several positive effects.

This theme developed the scientific knowledge to optimize the design and management of longitudinal training dams in terms of navigation, flood protection, and ecological rehabilitation. The innovative outputs are:

  • A new generic method to assess the effect of this novel intervention on the morphology of the main and side channel.
  • The impact of a longitudinal training dam on the local biodiversity is monitored.
