Governance relates to consistent management, cohesive policies, guidance, processes and decision-rights for a given area of responsibility. In contemporary river governance there are three key issues that play a pivotal role:

1. uncertainties of hydrodynamic models that form the basis of management strategies and related engineering interventions,
2. participation and civic engagement in monitoring and evaluation of (engineering) interventions and,
3. collaboration between societal stakeholders to identify and apply management strategies.
