How much sand does a secondary channel yield?

The construction of a secondary channel creates an additional habitat for life in the river. But such a secondary channel also causes the flow in the navigation channel to slow down. The expected consequence: sanding and possible nuisance for shipping. But does that effect always occur? And to what extent?
