Participants to the Symposium that took place last 20th and 19th of June/2018.
The Symposium started with two inspirational speakers, Prof. dr. Dagmar Haase (Humboldt -Universität Berlin) on Natural-based Solutions and Dr. Ing. Joanne Vinke-De Kruijf (University of Twente) on knowledge co-generation and governance.
Five of the RiverCare researchers joined to exchanged experiences and explore possibilities for collaboration with the PlanSmart team. PlanSmart supports the development and implementation of nature-based solutions in river landscape management systems by considering inter-disciplinary perspectives on the ecological, economic and social effects of different solutions. To that end, the project collaborates with an EU-LIFE project called ‘LiLa – Living Lahn’ by working together for the river development of the Lahn River, Germany. The PlanSmart team organizes a 2-year workshop series named ‘living labs’ that facilitate a space for interaction between management actors.
During the Symposium, participants shared and discussed common challenges divided into two groups: One about knowledge co-generation and the role of researchers in governance, the other one about financing and GIS modeling of ecosystem services. Thereby, they laid the foundations for future exchange and cooperation in addressing the social-ecological river challenges of today (see picture).
